Module title
Advanced Breeding
Prescription
To demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to companion and production animal reproduction including the collection, evaluation and processing of relevant samples, and control and correction of reproductive problems. To examine the management of the pre and postnatal period in companion animals. Students completing this module will have a range of practical skills, including semen collection and evaluation, blood collection and processing of serial vaginal smears. These skills should ensure that fertilization is optimized in an animal breeding programme. The student will have knowledge of a range of methods of reproductive control when breeding is not required; knowledge of the care and management of companion animals during the pre and post natal period. Problems arising in both the neonate and the mother will be recognised and treated, or avoided in future breeding programmes. Students will demonstrate knowledge of nutritional plans needed in the bitch and neonate from conception to weaning.

Learning Outcomes
- Collect and evaluate semen for quality for use in artificial breeding practices

- Compare options for the processing of semen (fresh, frozen, chilled)

- Determine the optimal time for mating by taking, processing and interpreting a vaginal smear and progesterone levels in blood samples (bitch)

- Evaluate the different types of insemination techniques used in animals (dog, cattle, sheep, goats and horses)

- Outline the procedures involved in embryo transfer (super ovulation and in vitro fertilization IVF)

- Explain the procedures and interpret results of methods for confirming pregnancy in companion animals (behaviour, physical changes, palpation, ultrasound, relaxin test and x ray)

- Analyse different methods of reproductive control to determine the most appropriate method for individual animals (medical and surgical)

- Recognise common causes of reproductive failure in animals

- Discuss with the client reproductive treatment options for companion animals.

- Create a model of an ideal environment for parturition with accessories (bedding, heating) to provide a safe and hygienic environment for mother and neonates

- Assess the need of the mother for medical and surgical intervention during parturition

- Assess common post-partum problems in the mother so that they can be treated appropriately, as directed by veterinarian

- Identify common health problems in neonates and young animals so that they can be treated appropriately as directed by veterinarian

- Recognise common congenital and hereditary problems so that they can be treated, as directed by a veterinarian

- Select appropriate food and equipment for hand-rearing an orphan puppy or kitten, ensuring optimal chance of survival

- Formulate a nutritional plan for the bitch during pregnancy and lactation

- Formulate a nutritional plan for the neonate from introduction of solids until weaning
