Prescription
To apply skill and knowledge to manage the high risk surgical patient; including the use and care of specialist equipment, preparation of the theatre, surgical staff and the animal patient for surgery. To monitor and manage anaesthesia procedures for the high risk patient from admission through to discharge. Students completing this module will: efficiently manage an operating theatre; confidently use different types of specialist apparatus, instrumentation and advanced monitoring equipment; aseptically prepare the specialist surgical patient and surgical staff; manage advanced procedures, anaesthesia and analgesia of the high risk patient and any complications that may arise (under veterinary supervision).

1. Describe the use and care of instrumentation used in specialised surgical procedures.

2. Assess and attend to high risk and compromised patients pre-, and post-operatively.

3. Apply principles of asepsis in all aspects of surgical nursing.

4. Compare and contrast modes of anaesthesia and analgesia for high risk / compromised patients.

5.Explain the proper preparation, use and maintenance of advanced monitoring equipment.
Content
Instrumentation:
- Instrumentation and its use.
- Correct assembly.
- Appropriate cleaning, packing and sterilisation.

Compromised patients:
- Identification of high risk/compromised patients.
- Routes for stabilising high risk/compromised patients before, during and after surgery.
- Pre-anaesthetic / pre-surgical sample preparation
- Fluid requirements
- Pain relief
- Wound care
- Thermoregulation

Asepsis:
- Planning of surgery list.
- Theatre preparation.
- Patient preparation.
- Sterile supply.
- Staff adherence to SOPs.

Anaesthesia
- Awareness of effects of drugs on patients
- Conditions which may cause comprise in an anaesthetised patient

Monitoring equipment
- Equipment set up.
- Equipment use - including patient monitoring.
- Cleaning and maintenance.
