Prescription
To apply skills and knowledge to effectively manage a wide range of intensive care situations in a veterinary practice. Students completing this module will: perform specialised techniques, including an in depth knowledge of intravenous therapy, advanced wound care, bandaging and nutritional support, an understanding of the use of chemotherapeutic agents and radioactive iodine, and develop a knowledge of physiotherapy techniques; provide nutritional support, including the use of prescription diets; practice specialist nursing techniques including oxygen therapy and the treatment and management of poisonings; support the needs of the hospitalised geriatric and diabetic animal patient.

1. Evaluate the range of fluids and equipment used in fluid therapy for intensive care patients.

2. Analyse effective wound care to a wide variety of wound types and explain complications which can arise.

3. Assess the use of radioactive and chemotherapeutic drugs in veterinary practice

4. Compare, contrast and apply advanced nursing care for a range of intensive care patients.

5 .Evaluate effective treatment and management regimes for poison cases
Content
- Advanced intravenous fluid therapy techniques (deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, blood products and blood therapy, patient assessment)
- Use of chemotherapeutic drugs, and radioactive Iodine
- Advanced wound care and bandaging
- Physiotherapy techniques
- Treatment of poisonings
- Specialist nursing techniques and care of special patients (Oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, feeding tubes, chest tubes)
