1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of acute and complex mental health and addiction issues across the lifespan
2. Carry out focussed and holistic assessments with service users
3. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of legal responsibilities and ethical accountability of a health and social practice professional
4. Evaluate and reflect on appropriate treatment strategies used by health and social practice professionals in supporting service users
5. Articulate and justify a personal integrated module of practice, acknowledging the centrality of the Treaty of Waitangi to own mental health and addictions practice.
6. Critically analyse safe practice techniques for 'at risk' service users
7. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of community service for on-going support
8. Apply knowledge of the principles of preventative measures and therapeutic interventions in a practice context
9. Demonstrate knowledge and practice of strength-based and recovery-based concepts in mental health and addictions practice
Content
-Acute and complex mental health and addiction issues
-Acute and complex mental health and addiction assessment frameworks
-Legal: Mental health and addiction (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992, CPMIP Act, Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act 2003, Intellectual Disability (Compulsory Care & Rehabilitation) Act 2003.
-Role of power, privilege and oppression and its relationship to mental health and addiction practice
-Cultural practice
-Ethical issues in relation to mental health and addiction.
-Treatment options and nurse responsibilities concerning treatment and documentation for acute and complex mental health and addiction issues
-Risk assessment and management of risk for acute and complex mental health and addiction issues
-Concepts of Recovery model of care and application of these concepts. Evidence for treatment options for prisoners with mental health and addiction issues
-Regional resources for tertiary referral/specialist services
-Therapeutic interventions in acute mental health and addictions practice.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching and learning will include a blend of face to face workshops, simulation and elearning processes. Prior reading will be made available and post workshop portfolio will be required for participants to demonstrate meeting learning outcomes and practice hours.

Learning strategies will introduce students to concepts from relevant literature and scientific knowledge, research evidence, and practice inquiry processes

Activities involving face to face, and simulation interaction with an emphasis on being student-centred and student self-directed: classroom-based workshops with elearning support, tutorials, online enquiry-based activities, and group activities.

Group activities will include reflective conversations, group work, tutorials, focused literature discussions, e learning and quick reference guides.
Learning and Teaching Resource
An extended reading list will be supplied by the lecturer at commencement of the module. This will be updated annually.
Assessment Criteria
This is an Achievement-based module. Students must attain an overall mark of 50 to receive a passing grade for this module.

Assessment Details

Students will be expected to develop a portfolio which supports their specific scope of practice and demonstrates reflexivity, critical thinking and praxis. This portfolio will include but not be limited to competency assessment, quick reference guides,.
The portfolio will help professionals to reflect on their practice and to determine future learning needs.
The type of evidence may include:
-Professional goals and objectives
-Significant learning events
-A narrative account of a student's practice
-Assessment by an employer/supervisor
-Peer review
-Practice learning log of evidence to meet learning outcomes
-Observed simulated clinical examination (OSCE)
