To explore and evaluate complex issues of women’s social, spiritual, environmental and psychological health from global, national and personal perspectives, including ethical and cultural, and the current legislation that informs midwifery practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Critically examine the diversity and health disparities that exist among childbearing women/waahine.
2. Critically examine the underlying historical, social, economic and political processes that have contributed to the health inequalities and disparities experienced by Maaori women/waahine.
3. Integrate and apply understanding of the diversity among childbearing women/waahine within the midwifery partnership.
4. Critically examine and apply bioethics and current legislation to the scope of midwifery practice.
5. Analyse and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in relation to bioethics within the midwifery partnership.
Content: • Evidence-based care in complex situations
• Diversity and health disparities that exist among childbearing women and discuss global and national trends
• Determinants of Maaori health
• Hauora and Maaori models of health
• Historical and ongoing mechanisms of colonization and impact on Maaori women/waahine and whaanau.
• Establishing and maintaining a culturally responsive midwifery partnership in diverse cultural, personal and social contexts
• Bioethics in midwifery practice
• Critical examination and application of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Tuuranga Kaupapa in relation to bioethics within the midwifery partnership
• Social crises including family violence
• Perinatal maternal mental health
• Pregnancy loss and bereavement
• Maternal and perinatal mortality
• Current legislation critically examined and applied in midwifery practice
• Process for supervising others and delegating tasks
• Midwifery assessment and decision making in complex and diverse environments
Assessment Criteria: Te Pae Tawhiti / Criteria to Pass this Module:
The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
