Learning Outcomes
1. Apply culturally responsive knowledge and skills to the holistic assessment of the woman/wahine in early pregnancy and/or preconception.
2. Work in partnership with women/waahine who are experiencing early pregnancy and gynaecological conditions and apply referral guidelines as appropriate.
3. Apply appropriate and culturally responsive communication skills when working with women/waahine, family/whaanau and other professionals, including documentation.
4. Apply knowledge of health screening programmes for women/waahine.
Content
Clinical placement (150 hours)
• Te Ao Maaori – Maaori world views, values and belief system
• Tikanga Maaori me Te Whare Tangata – Maaori customs and protocols pertaining to the womb, pregnancy and childbirth
• Considerations of ‘tau’ and ‘noa’ within midwifery practice
• Pepeha and mihimihi
• Te reo Maaori pronunciation
• Partnership with the woman/wahine
• Interprofessional relationships
• Screening programmes and diagnostic tools.
• Integration of knowledge and skills related to women’s health assessment
• Evidence-based practice
• Critical thinking and midwifery decision making

Assessment Criteria
The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module.
Students must meet all the clinical requirements, including evidence of a minimum of 150 hours clinical placement to be eligible to pass this module.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
May include: Project-based Learning; Flipped Classroom; Blended Learning; Work-integrated Learning; Inclusive Practices.
Methods may include workshops and practical classes, tutorials, case-based learning, inquiry-based learning, group activities & discussion, supported online learning, e-portfolio, practice simulation.
