On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Apply a developed understanding of normal childbirth to identify deviations and/or complications throughout the childbirth experience
2.Apply knowledge and skills to provide safe, competent midwifery care when there are deviations from the normal childbirth experience.
3.Participate in the interdisciplinary care of mother and the new born that requires complex care.
4.Apply skills competently in order to manage emergency situations.
Content
Knowledge and reflection
Complicated childbirth including pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, preterm labour, induction and augmentation of labour, ante partum haemorrhage, epidural, anaesthesia, regional and general anaesthesia, instrumental and surgical birth, care of the woman with medical conditions..
Knowledge integration.
Best practice guidelines.
Assessment knowledge and skills with appropriate response/actions including perineal repair.
Specific midwifery skills and use of appropriate technology that are associated with care for women with childbirth complications or are 'high risk' e.g. intravenous cannulation, interpretation of the cardiotograph (CTG) recording, Syntocinon infusion, induction of labour, breech, shoulder dystocia, APH, PPH, etc.
Simulated emergency situations.
Advanced neonatal resuscitation.
Adult resuscitation.
Care of the sick neonate
Understanding the technology in a neo-natal special care or intensive care unit.
Preparation for surgery.
Post-operative care for women following abdominal surgery and caesarean section.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, online exercises, independent study, practicum and reflection upon practicum.
Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.

Attendance at praxis session is compulsory to pass the module. Please see student handbook for details.
