The aim of this module is to develop students' practice, problem solving and critical thinking, to a level where they can provide safe, competent and confident midwifery care in relation to the normal neonate.

Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.

Attendance at praxis sessions is compulsory to pass the module. Please see student handbook for details.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will be in practicum across a variety of midwifery practice settings. There will be assessment within practicum and reflection upon practicum.
Content
Cultural competence and partnership
- Application of principles of partnership/cultural safety to midwifery practice in relation to normal neonate.

Knowledge and reflection
- Adaptations made by newborn following birth - physiological processes and normal newborn responses.
- Support agencies and groups, eg; Tamariki Ora/Well Child Providers, La Leche League.
- Routine neonatal screening programmes as offered via National Screening Unit.
- Immunisation schedule.

Decision making and critical thinking
- Frameworks to analyse information and make links between knowledge and practice.
- Effective problem solving methods.
- Applying research to practice.
- Initial assessment of new-born's condition at birth, including the Apgar assessment.
- Midwifery assessment of the new born at birth, one week and discharge from midwifery care.
- Guidelines relating to referral of newborn if necessary.
- Neonatal resuscitation.
- Decision making skills.
- Ethical, cultural, social and political influences on the decision making process.

Professional accountability
- Accountability in own practice.

Communication and documentation
- Communication within the context of midwifery practice.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Using the principles of partnership and cultural safety, confidently and competently implement midwifery care for the normal neonate.
2.Competently apply knowledge of the developments, adaptations and ongoing physical needs of the neonate to midwifery care.
3.Apply midwifery assessment skills and knowledge in the management of emergency situations with a neonate.
4.Demonstrate accountability in midwifery practice with professional communication and documentation.
