Cultural competence and partnership
- Application of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi to midwifery practice.
- Developing the partnership relationship with women and families.
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility when working with people different from themselves.

Knowledge and reflection
- Integration of midwifery knowledge and skills into own midwifery practice (skills described in HLBM603, HLBM501 and HLBM506).
- Integrating different ways of knowing into own practice.

Decision making and critical thinking
- Using criteria and frameworks to analyse information.
- Using effective problem solving methods.
- Applying research to practice.
- Caring for women and their families in normal pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium.
- Prioritising midwifery care safely and effectively.
- Demonstrating technical and practice competence in the midwifery care for women and families in normal childbirth.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Apply understanding of the midwifery partnership, using the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and cultural safety, with the woman and her whanau/family and demonstrate flexibility in interpersonal relationships.
2.Apply midwifery knowledge and skills competently and confidently within the normal childbirth experience.
3.Demonstrate professional practice and accountability within the scope of practice of the midwife
4.Competently assist in the management of named emergency situations.
5.Apply criteria or frameworks to analyse information and effectively solve problems that are encountered within midwifery practice.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will be in practicum across a variety of midwifery practice settings. There will be assessment within practicum and reflection upon practicum.
Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks.

A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However, students are expected to read widely.
