Prescription
The aim of this module is to introduce to students the cultural frameworks that inform Midwifery Practice in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Partnership relationships, principles of cultural safety and Turanga Kaupapa guidelines are explored to ensure that cultural requirements are met for women during pregnancy and childbirth.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Discuss the concept of midwifery as a partnership relationship and explain its relevance to the Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of cultural competence and Turanga Kaupapa guidelines in relation to midwifery practice.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the unique history of Aotearoa/New Zealand and Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi.
4. Describe the underlying historical, social, economic and political; processes that have contributed to the inequalities and disparities in the Mori health status.
5. Identify the links between colonisation and health of the people colonised.

- History of New Zealand and the implications of colonization and decolonization
- Self as knower: own social-cultural journey and attitudes
- Cultural and social belief systems
- Partnership Model in New Zealand Midwifery, women as shapers of the maternity service
and midwifery practice, political influences on childbearing and midwifery care
- Analysis of the Declaration of Independence, Te Tiriti O Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi, implications for cultural safety and partnership
- Principles of cultural safety and Turanga Kaupapa
- Nga Maia
- Implications of the Treaty of Waitangi for contemporary New Zealand Society
- Waitangi Tribunal reports
- Cultural requirements in midwifery practice
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, online exercises, practicum and independent study.
Recommended Readings
A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However students are expected to read widely.

Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.
