The aim of this module is to further develop midwifery practice skills and knowledge so that students gain competence and confidence in providing safe and culturally safe midwifery care within the scope of normal childbirth.

On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate partnership with the woman and her whanau/family. with application of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, cultural safety and Turanga Kaupapa.
2. Demonstrate developing knowledge and skills in midwifery practice
3. Demonstrate a developing understanding of decision making and critical thinking processes.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the professional boundaries of the scope of practice of the midwife and accountability in midwifery practice.
5. Demonstrate appropriate verbal and written communication with women, whanau/families and professionals.
Content
Cultural competence and partnership
- Application of Cultural safety/Turanga Kaupapa/Treaty of Waitangi/principles of partnership

Knowledge and reflection
- Integration of knowledge and practice skills (including those listed in HLBM501 and HLBM506) into own midwifery practice
- Development, adaptations and ongoing physical needs of newborn
- Different ways of knowing

Decision making and critical thinking
- Effective problem solving methods
- Application of research to practice
- Caring for women and their families in normal pregnancy, labour and birth and the puerperium
- Prioritising midwifery care safely and effectively
- Introduction to the management of named practice skills
- Developing effective time management
- Developing own decision making skills
- Ethical, cultural, social and political influences on the decision making process

Professional accountability
- Ability to demonstrate accountability in own practice

Communication and documentation
- Therapeutic communication with clients
- Communication within the context of midwifery practice

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will be in practicum across a variety of midwifery practice settings. There will be assessment within practicum and reflection upon practicum.

Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.
