The aim of this module is to introduce students to the physiology of lactation and establishment of breastfeeding, including assistance with common feeding problems. It also introduces principles applied in clinical practice, including history, culture and politics related to breastfeeding.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Understand the physiology of lactation and breastfeeding, the risks of artificial formula, the psychological and social influences upon infant feeding.
2.Demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding the facilitation, initiation and establishment of breastfeeding plan.
3.Explain common difficulties experienced by breastfeeding women and be able to think critically in order to competently solve these problems.
4.Demonstrate knowledge of public and institutional policies relating to infant feeding and how these influence the woman's experience.

- Anatomy and physiology
- Composition of breast milk and infant formula
- Breastfeeding from the woman's perspective
- The Maori experience of breastfeeding
- History of breastfeeding, globally and locally
- Nutrition for the lactating woman
- Psychosocial issues that may be barriers to breastfeeding
- Skills to facilitate breastfeeding
- Identify breastfeeding problems and solutions
- Public and institutional policies in relation to infant feeding including: Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, WHO Code, NZCOM consensus statement
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, online learning, practicum and independent study
Recommended Readings
A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However students are expected to read widely.
Basic of Assessment
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks.
