Prescription
This module aims to develop theoretically informed proficiency as an early childhood teacher, through critical reflection on experience in a licenced early childhood education service. This module will enable students to demonstrate their proficient understanding of praxis, where theory derives from practice and practice from theory. This module will enable students to critically select, apply, compare and extend on theory from other modules. It aims to develop effective skills for building and maintaining relationships with children and adults in the early childhood education setting. The module aims to develop leadership skills suitable for the early childhood setting and maintain a community of learners within the student cohort.

Learning Outcomes
1.Theoretically and philosophically justify teaching practice appropriate for the teaching context and use reflection as a tool to build on, change or justify own teaching practice.
2.Critically select, implement, and take complete responsibility for, the integration of a broad range of effective teaching strategies and techniques to meet individual and group learner needs.
3.Competently and confidently use formative assessment processes to document and assess children's learning.
4.Demonstrate effective skills for building and maintaining relationships with children and adults within the early childhood environment.
5.Competently and confidently show in practice an understanding of Tikanga Mori and use of te reo Mori.
6.Apply teaching methods which acknowledge the importance of equity and diversity through inclusive practice and recognise and respond to inappropriate teaching practice.
Content
The content of Field-Based Practice is embedded in the experiences, reflective activities, reading and dialogue undertaken by the student in the early childhood setting. The content of Field-Based Practice includes but is not limited to:
Reflective practice teaching techniques and strategies - (selection and application of basic techniques), use of te reo Mori me ng- tikanga-a-iwi (at a level appropriate to the early childhood education environment, development of basic critical thinking skills, basic principles and understanding of praxis, relevant literature to support practice, introduction to Communities of Practice and Communities of Learners, introduction to equity, diversity, biculturalism and multiculturalism, using child observations and formative assessment for evidence based practice, basic concepts of positive guidance, verbal and non-verbal communication, introduction to Te Whriki and early childhood education regulatory requirements and professional ethics.

1:1 Lecturer visits and meeting
Allocation of an approved suitable mentor
Agreement with Field-Based Practice Placement to support student with their study commitments, including identification of the 12 hours per week that is dedicated to Field-Based Practice requirements.

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Students are in Field-Based Practice placement that is licensed by the Ministry of Education for 12 hours per week for 10 weeks of the academic semester, under the supervision of an approved Mentor
1x Taught class at the beginning of the academic semester
1x Face to Face with Visiting Lecturer
1x 2hr 1:1 lecturer visits
E-Portfolio monitored by Visiting Lecturer
Reflective practice, experiential learning in the Field-Based Practice setting, praxis, literature, demonstration and instruction, self-directed learning, workshops and on-line participation
