This module aims to explore the holistic nature of learning and development with specific focus on infants, toddlers and children with special needs. The module aims to explore various attitudes and their impact on early childhood education and teaching practice. The module aims to develop skills and knowledge in supporting children and families, particularly during times of transition.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:

1.Critically reflect on and relate theories of development and learning and pedagogical
approaches to teaching practice with particular emphasis on infants and toddlers.
2.Examine a range of theoretical models and approaches for working with children with
additional needs and understand the wider societal impact of disability.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of Inclusive Practice and holistic development.
4. Critique their teaching practice with particular reflection on diversity across ages, ability and
additional needs.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 percent or better.

Theories of development and learning, holistic development and learning, attachment theory, brain development, attitudes and beliefs about infants and toddlers, theoretical models and approaches for working with children with additional needs, early intervention, Community support for additional needs, additional needs, Inclusion and diversity, Te Whriki, relevant legislation, attitudes towards inclusion and disability and working with families, Impacts of disability, transitions and programme planning and practice.

- Team taught, lectures, tutorials, literature, reflective practice, experiential learning through the Practicum placement, praxis, demonstration and instruction, specialist guest speakers, language instruction.
- Self-directed learning, workshops and online participation, and field trip.
