Prescription
This module aims to extend on learning and development theories taught in year one. Major theories and theorists are identified and critiqued. The module aims to develop understanding and competence in the subject areas of science, mathematics, and technology and to develop understanding of the relationship between the physical environment, including aesthetics and children's learning.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
1.Identify and describe the major theories and theorists in development and learning, including Maori concepts, and the impacts these have on early childhood education.
2.Implement and evaluate subject knowledge and skills in relation to science, mathematics and technology.
3.Critique the relationship between the physical learning environment and curriculum delivery.
4.Identify and discuss Aotearoa New Zealand's regulatory and safety requirements in relation to the environment of early childhood education settings.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.

Content

Western and non-western development and learning theories and theorists, subject knowledge, in mathematics, science and technology suitable for the early childhood education teaching environment, early childhood education environments and environmental design and aesthetics, relevant regulatory requirements and curriculum content.

- Team taught, lectures, lecturerials, literature, reflective practice, experiential learning through the Practicum placement, praxis, demonstration and instruction, specialist guest speakers, language instruction
- Self-directed learning, workshops and online participation, and participation in Community of Practice/Learners

- Academic staff with relevant qualifications, knowledge and skills in early childhood education
- Web enhancement
- Early childhood education teaching room with wet floor facilities
- Access to outside area
- Agreement with Practicum placement to support student with their study commitments

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.
