This module aims to develop an introductory understanding of human development, particularly child development. It will introduce students to the concept of attachment theory, and other theories particular to the 0-8 years. Students will develop an introductory understanding of language development and will practice observation techniques. It aims to develop an introductory understanding of Maori perspectives and theories on development and learning and basic te reo Maori.

- By the end of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an introductory understanding of child development and learning.
2. Use a wide range of observation skills within an early childhood education setting for
teaching and learning.
3. Identify and describe Mori perspectives on development and learning, and apply Tikanga
and Te Reo Mori related to development learning and play. - Content
- This module aims to introduce the holistic nature of child development and learning, language acquisition and will include Maori perspectives and theories of child development and learning. It will examine theories relevant to early childhood education, including attachment theory. It aims to further develop student's competence in observation skills crucial to effective teaching and learning.

- - Team taught, lectures, tutorials, literature, reflective practice, experiential learning through practicum, praxis, demonstration and instruction, specialist guest speakers, language instruction, ICT labs and library sessions.

- Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.
