This module aims to introduce and examine the value of play in early childhood education. It aims to introduce the holistic nature of child development and learning, including Maori perspectives and theories of child development, learning and play.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of play and the value of types of play in
early childhood settings in Aotearoa New Zealand, including an understanding of the role
of the teacher in supporting play.

2. Show in practice introductory confidence in Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori for use
within the early childhood education setting and design, apply and evaluate Maaori
teaching resources.

3. Apply basic subject knowledge in areas of play in early childhood education settings.
Content
Introduction to values of play, theories of play, and areas of play including music and movement, the visual arts, dramatic play and emergent literacy. Introduction to Te Reo Maori and Maori teaching resources suitable in supporting teaching Te Reo Mori through modelling of the language and Tikanga Maori.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Lectures, tutorials, literature, reflective practice, experiential learning, praxis, demonstration and instruction.
- Self directed learning, workshops and online participation, and resource making.

- Academic staff with relevant qualifications, knowledge and skills in early childhood education
- Web enhancement
- Early childhood education Teaching room with wet floor facilities
- Access to outside area
- Agreement with Practicum placement to support student with their study commitments

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.

Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.
