This module aims to develop understanding of the principles and practice of early childhood education in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It aims to develop an introductory understanding praxis and the nature of field based teacher education, and also aims to introduce the concepts and application of reflective practice, teaching techniques and strategies and observation based planning, teaching and assessing.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify principles of professional early childhood teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand and
will have an introductory understanding of New Zealand/Aotearoa curriculum documents,
early childhood education services, and agencies.

2. Demonstrate an introductory understanding of praxis and reflective practice in relation to
the field based teacher education model and an introductory understanding of critical
thinking.

3. Demonstrate an introductory understanding of teaching techniques and strategies.

4. Describe and implement a range of observation and assessment techniques used in early
childhood education settings.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is achievement based. Students will be required to achieve a result of 40 or better in each of the assessment tasks. The overall mark to pass the module must be 50 or better.
Content
Introduction to principles of professional early childhood education teaching, historical and theoretical frameworks of early childhood education, New Zealand/Aotearoa curriculum documents, Te Tiriti Waitangi, early childhood education services and agencies in Aotearoa/New Zealand, the roles of a teacher, observations as the basis for evidenced based teaching, learning stories and other child assessment methods, basic principles of reflective practice, the Wintec reflective practice tool, basic critical thinking principles and skills, philosophy and practice of field based teacher education, introductory understanding of praxis, identifying appropriate teaching techniques and strategies, the planning, teaching and assessing cycle
