This course aims to develop students' practical and contextual knowledge of stills photography, and moving image making within specific media contexts such as video journalism, podcasting, video art installation, documentation, etc Through practical projects students will acquire basic skills in digital photography, video, digital processing, composition, lighting, editing, image/text relationships and reading narratives. Through examining case studies students will discuss a range of cultural issues facing photographers, videographers, and audience.

Content: 3.1 Media Capture
Digital camera - basic operation, menu,
Exposure - light metre, shutter speed, aperture
Lens types
Quality of light: direction, intensity, soft/hard, colour temperature, beam pattern direct flash, fill flash, constant light, reflected light.
Compositional conventions - form, line, figure/field, scale, movement, focus
Screen image
Sound recording - microphones, level and controls

3.2 Digital Processing and Output
Digital file management
Basic image adjustments - colour correction and colour grading, tonal range, image manipulation, sharpness cropping.
Output specifications - file formats, RGB/CMYK, codecs and file sizes.
Basic sound enhancement and manipulaton
Media Outputs - Basic printing, Digital slideshow, moving image formatted for multiple mediums.
