This module examines the theoretical and practical knowledge required for the production of industry standard moving images on film and video. The student will apply these skills through workshops and a studio-based production shot on film or video. This module emphasises the preparation of students for full scale productions on 16mm film format, and video, at an industry-standard level, in year 3.

Learning Outcomes: 2.1 Understand a design process which integrates cognitive, practical and communication skills
- discuss, identify and evaluate the situations and issues set in the assignment brief

2.2 Understand the skills required to expose an image on to film
- explore and control the functions of various cine format camera techniques
- develop skills for measuring light to obtain the critical exposure for cine work
- conduct practical exercises in class of image control and manipulation
- examine different format films and cameras
- explore and conduct practices to show skills in filter combinations
- experiment with depth of field and relate back to recording electronically
- generate and regenerate image from ideas developed
- facilitate proactive communication and teamwork skills
- explore the workings and implications of reconnaissance, budgeting, scheduling and location showing.

2.3 Understand the techniques for field recording separate synchronous sound
- understand the reasons behind having to record onboard or off board sound
- discuss and interpret theories of stereo audio
- develop skills in control of recording 3 dimensional sounds
- discuss the formats to log recorded material so as to relate to sync images

2.4 Advance an understanding of the technical aspects of advanced illumination
- research the various luminants which are used in the industries
- investigate the absorption of light onto film
- begin to understand the methods of manipulating advanced illumination
- isolate certain ideas that will apply to non text book light situations
- discuss and demonstrate the ability to understand the laws behind natural light
- consider and reflect on the applications and outcomes.

2.5 Understand technical aspects of advanced post- production
- redevelop skills of linear to non-linear editing
- discuss time-encoded images and apply to practical assignments
- research the timecode structures which merge film and video
- successfully integrate digital postproduction and film images
- control the processes of matching negative to fine-cut image/sound.

2.6 Understand the process of production through production management practice
- Develop skills in the planing and scheduling of film/video production
- Understand the process of pre-production, production and post production through the production office process.
- Develop skills in assessing the needs of production and implementing these in preparing a production budget.

Content: 3.1 Initial familiarisation to all aspects of the film business
Explore the self developed styles of measuring incident light
Research the availabilities and different styles of film stocks
Understand the variations between video and film depth of fields
Develop a understanding of professional camera techniques
Adopt techniques that explore the boundaries of contemporary exposure controls and physical camera placements
Handling techniques of film
Laboratory processing reflect on the controls that can be placed upon the image after exposure
Understand that controlling the speed of the camera will increase or decrease playback time
Ability to collaborate in a crew roll and appreciate the respective role chosen, understand the overall workings of this role
Develop an understanding of pre-production, production and post production processes

3.2 Examine the theories on illuminating scenes for film
Multi / mixed illuminated scenes
Night illumination
Variable illumination levels that relate to choosing film stocks
Natural lighting
Colour temperature control merging camera / lighting filters
Portable illumination
Show a level of understand of major film set illumination
Experiment with natural light mixed with luminants and apply to practical applications that will cross over from the drama/doco breifs

3.3 Field sound recording for film
Mixing various types of microphones on a portable recorder
Interior / exterior sound recording
Systematically become proficient in postproduction constraints of regenerating sound at a uniform level on a multi layered sound design
Time-encoded recorded audio related to image
Slate marking understanding the various techniques

3.4 Continue to develop non-linear post production skills
Research the availibility of non linear editing formats
Independently liaise with film laboratories and research the functions of the labs
Investigate how digital editing techniques merge with filmed footage
& relating timecode numbers to edge numbers on film to complete a finished product
Develop further skills in drama/documentary editing with an emphasis on contemporary practice

3.5 Studio Production Workshop
Develop an understanding of studio production through the implementation of technology roles.
Working in a production unit follow the pre-production, production and post production of a studio based shoot

Evidence of Achievement: Each unit will comprise assignment-led tutorials and technical workshops in the moving image modes relevant to narrative, documentary. The students ability to collaborate and cooperate with peers and tutors is forefronted in all class activity and assignments.

Basic of Assessment: Purpose of the assessment is to evaluate students technical understanding and developmental processes. Assessing their ability to apply this understanding within a collaborative environment.
