Prescription
This internship module provides the student with a structured introduction to industry/professional practice contexts. Emphasis is placed on the identification and negotiation of learning objectives, activities and outcomes in relation to a professional context. The student is required to critically assess the quality of their experience and performance in relation to their learning objectives.

- 2. LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
2.1 Identify learning needs and negotiate an internship placement suitable to those needs
- understand a range of possible learning objectives, activities and outcomes
- identify own skills and abilities and isolate appropriate learning objectives, activities and outcomes in relation to these
- exercise interpersonal skills in the negotiation of learning contract
2.2 Demonstrate understanding of chosen industry/professional practice context
- describe and analyse industry/professional practice context
- critically assess the quality of internship experience in relation to learning objectives
2.3 Understand the values, methodologies and strategies which inform current professional practice in a selected domain
- compare, analyse and evaluate selected texts identifying issues relevant to a specific contemporary practice
- analyse a selection of current works and identify the specific methods used in their production
- compare significant changes in methods of practice and strategies for production relevant to a specific contemporary practice
- develop and implement a strategy for the production of work which explicitly applies the analysis of values from a domain
- evaluate self practice using normative criteria derived from a current domain
- plan and implement a conventional presentation of own works
- develop critical synergies between representative texts, examples of work and self practice
2.4 Demonstrate ability to operate effectively within chosen industry/professional practice context
- undertake roles as defined by the learning activities in the learning contract agreement or equivalent
- critically assess the quality of performance in relation to learning objectives
3. CONTENT
3.1 Responsibilities of Student
3.1.1 Project Description:
Identify learning needs. Specify internship objectives, activities and outcomes in project description. Search for work placement (may not apply in some majors, eg journalism).Negotiate project description with employer, tutors and internship supervisor
3.1.2 Work Experience:
Complete 120 hours work experience in chosen industry/professional practice context
3.1.3 Evidence Portfolio
An evidence portfolio which may contain but not limited to, visual, written or audio evidence of your working experience. This includes drafts, photographs, process, reflective summaries of experience.
3.1.4 Report:
a) Introductory Report: 500 words
Describes industry/professional practice environment and critically appraised internship experience
b) Summary Report: 750-1000 words
3.1.5 Seminar:
Prepare and present to Internship Supervisor, tutor (optional) and peers
3.1.6 Peer Critique:
Seminar participation and provide feedback to seminar presentor.
3.2 Responsibilities of Internship Supervisor
3.2.1 Work Placement:
Advise students (where necessary) on choice of work placement
3.2.2 Learning Project:
Assist students in identifying learning needs and writing learning contracts. Approve student learning contract
3.2.3 Liaison:
Maintain contact with employer
3.2.4 Seminars:
Coordinate student presentations
3.2.5 Assessment:
Complete final assessment of student's work in relation to learning contract
3.3 Responsibilities of Tutor
3.3.1 Learning Project:
Approve student learning projects
3.3.2 Final Assessment (if necessary):
Attend seminar presentations and participate with Internship Supervisor in final assessments
3.4 Responsibilities of Employer
3.4.1Negotiate projection description with student
3.4.2Provide 120 hours unpaid work experience for students
3.4.3Provide a report/evaluation on student's performance - Short Course Overview
- Internships provide students with a structured introduction to industry/professional practice contexts. Emphasis is placed on the identification and negotiation of learning objectives, activities and outcomes in relation to a professional context. Students are required to critically assess the quality of their experience and performance in relation to their learning objectives.
- Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Mentoring of interns by business group.
Discussion on project and of work produced with Internship Director, core course leader and intern.
