Prescription
The purpose of this module focuses on the investigation of painting practice at an advanced level. The student will examine strategies and concepts located in contemporary painting. The student will be expected to contextualise their study through reading, seminars and writing. The student will further examine and refine their understanding of how the meanings of particular techniques and materials are applicable in the context of this study.

2LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

2.1 Understand an integrated, reflective process for responding to visual situations
- discuss, identify and evaluate issues relevant to the project
- generate, analyse and integrate negotiated criteria for a self-directed project
- synthesise acquired practical, communication and analytical skills in the process of responding to visual situations
- individualise a self-critical working process for developing and refining ideas
- draw together and apply knowledge acquired in previous and concurrent courses to selected projects
- adopt independent and interdependent methods of working

2.2 Recognise and apply selected conceptual frameworks to a painting project.
- investigate the symbiotic relationship between concepts, materials, techniques and genre on interpretation

2.3 Acquire knowledge in developing a studio project that examines a specialist area of contemporary art practice
- develop a written project description which isolates the issues from previous work and how they will be extended
- successfully perform the tasks and criteria set out in the project description
- advance procedural knowledge, skills and techniques particular to a selected field of practice
- produce a body of work consistent with current norms in practice and discourse of its domain

2.4 Understand the values, methodologies and strategies which inform current professional practice in painting
- compare, analyse and evaluate selected texts identifying issues relevant to a specific contemporary practice
- analyse a selection of current works and identify the specific methods used in their production .
- compare significant changes in methods of practice and strategies for production relevant to a specific contemporary practice
- develop and implement a strategy for the production of work which explicitly applies the analysis of values from a domain
- evaluate self practice using normative criteria derived from a current domain
- plan and implement a conventional presentation of own works
- develop critical synergies between representative texts, examples of work and self practice

2.5 Understand the value of self-evaluation within the context of professional practice
- develop individuated assessment criteria
- reflect critically upon the relationship between an adopted method of production, the final project outcomes and relevant conventions of practice
- continuously self-evaluate performance independent of institutional assessment
- participate in self/peer critiques for ongoing formative assessment
- critically consider, discuss and document self and peer performances for regular graded assessment
- actively participate in and facilitate group and class critiques

- Identifying and describing the features of a selected artist's work in terms of their approach to concepts, production and context
