Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of page layout and typography for publication.

Range - Explanations are in accordance with the industry texts.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Elements of page layout and typographical variations required for publication are explained.

Range - Elements include but are not limited to - horizontal, vertical and irregular shapes; choice of type fonts; column widths; graphics; use of colour; number of columns; typographical variations include - fonts, kerning, point sizes, serif and sans serif, capitals and lower case, bold and light, underlining, Roman and italic, column widths, leading, x-height, condensing, hyphenation and justification, quads, headlines, decks, body text, colour.

1.2 Impact on publication design of different types of font is explained.

Range - Evidence is required for 15 different types of font.

1.3 Typographical variations are explained in terms of their impact on design, reader accessibility, and legibility.

Range - Evidence is required for four different typographical variations.

1.4 Ways in which column number and width determine the activity of a page are explained.

1.5 The use of illustrations and colour are explained in terms of their impact on the layout and design and reader attention.

Outcome 2

Write headlines for publication.

Range - Evidence is required for six headlines which must be in accordance with the publishable standard.

2.1 Headlines accurately reflect content of stories and attract reader attention.

2.2 Headlines meet design criteria.

2.3 Headlines fit spaces allowed.

Outcome 3

Lay out a page for publication.

Range - Evidence is required for one page layout which must be in accordance with the publishable standard.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Layout reflects news value of stories and illustrations, creating a logical path for the reader to follow.

3.2 Depth and size of headlines suit story size, ranking, and page design.

3.3 Photographs are sized and cropped to highlight their key point and to fit the page and the story.

3.4 Caption(s) fits design configurations of the page.

Outcome 4

Subedit raw copy for publication.

Range - Evidence is required for subediting a passage of raw news copy of at least 500 words which must be in accordance with the publishable standard.

Evidence requirements

4.1 News story copy is assessed for suitability for publication.

Range - Impact of introductory paragraph, logic of story structure, legal risks, completeness, direct and indirect quotes, attribution, clarity, fairness, accuracy, balance, quality standards of language to assist audience comprehension, logic of structure, readability, differentiation between fact and opinion, punctuation, grammar, spelling, numeracy, house style.

4.2 The news story writer is consulted about any proposed changes and any need for additional information.

4.3 News story copy is amended to meet editorial requirements.

Range - Includes but is not limited to - correct grammar, punctuation and spelling; media style; legally and ethically safe; length.
