Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Analyse and synthesise information from complex, academic, written texts.
LO2: Write a well-structured, sophisticated, extended academic text using a range of sources.
Content
• Critically analyse extensive academic texts (research articles, book chapters, authentic texts)
• Describe and evaluate visual and statistical information (e.g. diagrams, graphs, maps)
• Critically respond to ideas in a complex written academic texts
• Make notes, summarise and synthesise ideas
• Evaluate the reliability and suitability of sources
• Write research questions, aims and objectives
• Write a report in the format of an academic/journal article
• Evaluate evidence and arguments
• Synthesise and integrate research from secondary sources
• A range of specialised vocabulary relevant to the academic and/or professional field
• New General Service List, first 3000 words
• New Academic Word List
Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
