Students will be introduced to the listening and speaking skills required to communicate independently and effectively in a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic contexts.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Respond appropriately to an extended complex oral monologue of an academic nature.
LO2: Deliver an extended oral presentation in English for academic purposes.
Content
• Identify structure, main ideas and relevant details of an academic lecture
• Identify idiomatic use of language
• Take structured notes, use common abbreviations and summarise a lecture
• Critically respond to ideas in extended speech (e.g. opinion or summary)
• Use a range of presentation skills and language (e.g. rhetorical questions, pausing, signposting words and phrases, creating and using visuals)
• Use appropriate style and register and relevant conventions of spoken language
• Recognise and pronounce words and phrases in continuous, extended speech (e.g. appropriate stress, rhythm, pausing, intonation, and linking of sounds)
Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
