Students will develop the reading and writing skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Locate, analyse and synthesise the main ideas and supporting details of moderately complex texts of an academic nature.
LO2: Write a crafted text appropriate to audience and purpose, synthesising and evaluating information and arguments from researched material.
Content
• Identify purpose and features of academic texts
• Identify inferred, implied and literal meaning in moderately complex written texts
• Describe and analyse visual information (e.g. diagrams, graphs, maps etc.)
• Search for sources on library catalogue and databases
• Produce coherent writing in academic genres (e.g. compare and contrast essays, cause and effect essays)
• Synthesise information from a range of sources
• Integrate research into written work (quoting, reporting, paraphrasing and summarising)
• Accurately use APA referencing and formatting
• Use similarity checking software (e.g. Turnitin)
• Use appropriate academic style and conventions
• Analyse and use a range of complex sentence structures and cohesive devices
• A range of specialised vocabulary relevant to the academic and/or professional field
• Read extensive texts
• New General Service List, first 2500 words; New Academic Word List
Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Achieve all unit standards
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
