Students will be introduced to the listening and speaking skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Respond appropriately to main ideas and supporting details of moderately complex oral texts for academic purposes.
LO2: Participate effectively in sustained spoken discourses for academic purposes.
Content
• Identify main ideas and relevant details of more complex speech
• Identify key words
• Recognise the organisation of an academic lecture
• Take structured notes, use common abbreviations and summarise a lecture
• Respond to extended speech (e.g. opinion or summary)
• Follow and engage in discussions with multiple participants on a range of academic topics
• Identify and use a range of turn-taking and negotiating strategies and language (e.g. interrupting, regaining ground, inviting others to speak, asking for and giving opinions, clarifying and seeking clarification)
• Identify and express feelings, opinions and reactions
• Speculate and make polite suggestions
• Support and exemplify arguments
• Respond appropriately to others’ ideas, opinions and suggestions
• Use appropriate style and register
• Expand, clarify and question
• Apply relevant conventions in spoken language
• Develop fluency, spontaneity and coherence
• Use sentence stress patterns and intonation to convey meaning
Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Achieve all unit standards
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
