IMCT402
Module title
Process Control Practice 1
Prescription
To provide students with the ability to successfully test processes to determine their responses, to set up and configure control loop components and equipment for stand-alone and DCS based installations for simple and complex control situations, and to be able to test and tune control loops using standard methodologies.

Resources required
- Learning Outcomes
- 1:Demonstrate an understanding of different process properties and from this their different control needs
2:Investigate P, I, D, PI, PD, and PID open loop behaviours and how three term controllers are constructed and operate
3:Select and apply appropriate initial control settings for temperature, pressure, level, and flow processes
4:Set up and systematically tune single loop control loops for temperature, pressure, level, and flow processes using accepted methodologies
5:Configure and tune advanced control loops (cascade, feedforward, and ratio) in a DCS system - Content
- -Investigation of process properties - dead time, integral, first and second order exponential lag processes, first order lag plus dead time process
-Three term controller construction
-P, I, D, PI, PD, and PID control term open loop tests and analysis
-Configuration of stand-alone and DCS based control loops
-Control parameter selection, application and testing for initial start up
-Control loop tuning for single and multiple loop applications - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Learning will be by way of structured practical learning where students are given a range of tasks to complete and observations to make from their practical findings.
Students will be required to research some aspects of their practical by way of reference to manufacturers' instructions which may be via library/database and/or internet searches. - Assessment Criteria
- Task 1Practical assessment and written report 20
Task 2Practical assessment and written report20
