This module aims to introduce students to the methods, values and techniques designers use to record and refine visual fashion concepts. Students will develop their manual and computer visual communication skills by creating design concepts for the fashion industry. Students will examine a selection of techniques and strategies for the development of their work in conjunction with contemporary fashion design practices.

2LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
2.1Use a process which advances the structured and reflective refinement of a design problem
- identify the problems and issues set in the course brief
- complete self-directed research and reflect upon working processes
- demonstrate the structured resolution of a process through the generation, regeneration, manipulation, and refinement of ideas
- discuss with peers and tutors the individual working process adopted
- show evidence of independent and interdependent processes for working

2.2Develop ideas through the gathering and processing of visual information for the fashion industry
- use preliminary research strategies to develop a visual resource
- respond to and process this visual resource with appropriate developmental strategies
- use this visual resource to refine and develop formal / conceptual propositions in the development of a fashion concept

2.3Demonstrate a knowledge of conventional design methods, techniques and approaches to fashion
- discuss and apply the use of digital media as a strategic tool in the development of a fashion idea
- discuss and apply conventional drawing methods in the development of fashion ideas
- experiment with a variety of media in the development of a fashion design concept
- apply a drawing vocabulary to the solution of visual fashion concepts

2.4Demonstrate a knowledge of a range of strategies used by fashion designers in the development of contemporary design concepts
- discuss selected fashion design methodologies for collection, editing and refining concepts
- explore a range of strategies for collection, editing and refining of fashion concepts in conjunction with a specific proposal

2.5Develop fashion illustration techniques and styles, including the use of current illustration software
- collect design inspirations from a variety of sources
- use current illustration software to scan and edit manually produced fashion figures
- select an appropriate fashion presentation style and format
- produce a professional and effective fashion presentation board of original or adapted designs

2.6Comprehend the process of a graded assessment
- employ a vocabulary for describing work
- write own objectives actively participate in group and class critiques
- consider and reflect upon self and peer design processes and decisions
- participate in ongoing formative assessment
- consider, discuss, and document self and peer performances for graded assessment

LEARNING PROCESS
Lecturer monitors students' progress through the time management of individual projects.
Students research technical and formal issues to present as a class resource.
Students initiate research relating to content for their own projects.
Lecturer identifies problems with a student's process; lecturer and student develop strategies for approaching future projects.
Lecturer prescribes topics; students identify specific questions within those topics.
Students participate in informal presentations of their work.
Students participate in graded assessment according to criteria set by lecturer.
Graded assessment performed by self, peers and tutors.
Assessment Criteria
To pass this module, students must complete and pass all assignments and accumulate an overall module mark of no less than 50.
