To provide students with the necessary attributes, skills and knowledge to apply disease management and preventative health strategies for a range of common conditions in rural animals. Includes 20 hours work placement in a rural or mixed veterinary clinic setting.

Learning Outcomes
1:Develop and communicate preventative health programmes for a range of common conditions found in rural animals
2:Develop and communicate control strategies for infectious, nutritional, exotic and parasitic diseases in rural animals.
Content
-Hygiene in the rural environment.
-Disease transmission and control; preventative health programmes; vaccination programmes; mastitis management; lameness management; reproductive management.
-First aid for rural animals.
-Control of zoonotic, exotic and parasitic diseases.
-Professional practice attributes: knowledge of animal welfare standards and relevant legislation; sustainable practices; effective communication skills; accurate record-keeping.
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will be facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/industry visits
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitated/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers
Assessment Criteria
Assessment 1Portfolio of evidence100
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. The portfolio is comprised of multiple assessment tasks. To pass this module all tasks must be submitted and an overall minimum pass mark of 50 is required. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency based tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement based tasks.
