Counselling students in session
A rewarding and fulfilling profession, the field of counselling involves working with a large cross-section of society. Counsellors help equip individuals, families, and communities with the tools they need to overcome challenges and thrive. They listen, respond, and reflect with clients, researching options that will help assist clients’ decision-making.

Wintec is Waikato’s sole provider of a bachelor’s degree in counselling and is one of only three institutes nationwide that offers on-campus learning as part of the programme. This means our students get the best of both worlds — combining on-site learning one-day-a-week with at-home and on-the-job learning, providing a balance.

Wintec offers the Certificate in Health and Wellbeing and Te Ara Pūtake My Academic Pathway (Social Service pathway) as possible pathway programmes for those who initially may not meet the entry criteria. Those interested in counselling may also wish to explore other similar fields such as Social Work and many other programmes available through the Wintec Centre for Health and Social Practice.
