Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Analyse the strategic direction of an organisation and its appropriateness to the organisation's micro and macro environments

2. Synthesise the situation analysis into a new context (i.e. the future) and generate possible strategies for the organisation

3. Assess the overall impact of globalisation, ethics and social responsibility and the management of change on strategy

4. Analyse the various line strategies involved in strategic management and evaluate methods for their integration into an overall strategic plan

Content
Strategic management methodology
- The external environment : opportunities, threats, industry competition and competitor analysis
- The effects of global strategies both for the organisation and its competitors
- The nature of ethics and corporate social responsibility for specific situations on strategy
- Differentiating between strategic thinking, strategic management and strategic planning
- Appropriate selection criteria for an implementation schedule
- Feedback and control mechanisms to measure the effects of strategies

Strategy formulation : business-level and corporate-level strategies, competitive dynamics, acquisition and restructuring, international strategy
- Organisations' strategic direction
- Types of change and their suitability in specific situations
- The internal environment : resources, capabilities and core competencies
- Availability strategies for operations finance, marketing, human resources and information systems

Strategic actions : corporate governance, organisational structure and controls, strategic leadership and entrepreneurship
Learning and Teaching Resource
Teaching will involve blended delivery methods incorporating theoretical and practical classes, face to face, lectures, tutorials, workshops, group activities, guest lecturers, field trips, role-play, video conferencing, and on-line delivery, as appropriate
Teaching and Learning Strategy
An extended reading list will be supplied by the lecturer at commencement of the module. This will be updated annually.
Assessment Criteria
In order to receive a passing grade, students must achieve a minimum 40% average over all supervised tests and achieve 50% overall for the module.
